Course Readings and Reserves - Information for Faculty

circulationThe Western Libraries has put in place procedures to assure that instructors who use supplemental readings in their courses are leveraging the libraries’ extensive electronic and print collections to reduce costs for both their departments and students.

Allowing the library to post readings on course reserve reduces individual faculty culpability for following U.S. Copyright Laws and Fair Use Guidelines.

To help instructors determine the most efficient and cost effective approach for providing access to course materials, the library offers several options.

  • Electronic Reserves
    • To gather materials for e-reserve lists library staff will:
      • Check our database subscriptions to identify materials already licensed for WWU users
      • Check our collections for materials we own
      • Scan materials provided by faculty
      • Purchase hard copy and/or ebooks, as needed
      • Gain copyright clearance, as needed, or search for a suitable substitute.
  • Physical Course Reserves
    • The library will retrieve materials from our collection and accept materials from faculty and their departments, to place on hard copy reserve in a secure area with restricted loan periods.
  • Initiate the process of putting readings and materials on reserve in person at the Libraries’ Haggard Circulation Desk or by submitting the course reserve form online.
