Not Even Close Portraits
Not Even Close
Grid-Based Self Portraits
ART 200, Winter 2009
Wilson Library, 3 Central
February 23 to March 11
Painting students mixed thousands of slightly shifting colors in a project based on the work of artist Chuck Close. Working with pictures they took of one another, students matched colors one unit at a time from photo to canvas, creating intricate self-portraits.
While the paintings technically tackle optical color mixing problems, they also reflect on perceptual psychology: how information is synthesized, how scale and proximity influence recognition.
