"I'm Not the Indian You Had In Mind":
Rethinking Indigenous Identity in Children's Literature
Who is Indian? Who decides who is Indian? How does an examination of children's literature address the issues of Indigenous identity, stereotyping, sovereignty, self-determination and survivance (Indigenous survival and resistance)?
In this presentation, Dr. Kristen French, Director of Center for Education, Equity and Diversity and faculty member in the Department of Elementary Education at Western Washington University will examine the complexity of Indigenous identity through children's literature while engaging with the possibilities and challenges of transformative praxis.
