Featured Instructors for the 18-19 Showcase: Jessica Ferreras-Stone (Elementary Ed.), Kamarie Chapman (Theatre & Dance), and Mark Staton (Finance & Marketing)

Each spring, the Center for Instructional Innovation & Assessment (CIIA) works with several instructors to highlight exceptional practices via the Innovative Teaching Showcase web publication. This year's theme is “Open Educational Practices” which draws upon open educational resources (OERs) to facilitate collaborative and flexible learning and encourage free and open access to knowledge.

The following faculty will be featured and celebrated at the Showcase Learning Event on June 7, 2019 between 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. in Wilson Library 270:

  • Kamarie Chapman (Theatre and Dance)
  • Mark Staton (Finance and Marketing)
  • Jessica Ferreras-Stone (Elementary Education)

For 20 years, the CIIA has published an online edition of its Innovative Teaching Showcase—a collection by more than 70 WWU faculty members of innovative teaching practices. It includes video interviews and portfolio write-ups of teaching approaches accompanied by syllabi, assignments, examples, comments, and resources. The Showcase also includes a “profiles” page where more ideas can be shared. Help us include more of the ways people are using free or low cost materials by contributing a short description of what you do here.

Since the 1990’s the design of the Showcase evolved into a Creative Commons-licensed collection, catalogued via Western Libraries, and followed by a global audience. With this year’s renewed focus on “openness,” the Showcase promotes open access to educational content and inclusive and equitable practices. The new Showcase issue will be published prior to the event.

The CIIA at Western is the host of the Showcase Learning Event and partners with Western Libraries to hold the event inside the library building. The event is structured a bit like an open house and you are invited to stop by any time during the event (6/7, 1-3 p.m., WL270) to learn about instructional strategies, watch the Showcase videos, meet the featured instructors, and explore the options in open educational practices.
