Welcome New Colleagues!


An effective employee onboarding program is an important component in training and retaining excellent colleagues. At Western Libraries, we invest in our new colleagues by preparing a thorough employee orientation program. The sample schedule below offers an overview of the onboarding activities our new employees will likely experience before the first day of employment, on the first day, in the first week, and beyond. 

Before Arrival

  • Develop Onboarding Checklist. See a sample here.
  • Issue W# and WWU credentials.
  • Send a link to this website.
  • Confirm work location.

First Day

First Week

  • Review position description and duties.
  • Emergency Procedures.
  • Introduce new colleague to mentor.
  • Set up orientation meetings with various divisions and units.

First Month

  • Arrange in job shadowing if necessary.
  • Complete division and unit orientations.
  • Review Library and University community resources (e.g., Human Resources, etc.).
  • Set up orientation meetings with relevant University Partners (e.g., ATUS for Library IT Colleagues, etc.).
