A "Winter Wonderland" in miniature has come to the library! The exhibit features books from the Helene Whitson Collection and ceramics from the Mathes Reading Figurines Collections that reflect the joyfulness of this most magical of seasons.
The Helene Whitson Collection is the generous gift of Helene Whitson, librarian, archivist, and passionate collector of children’s literature, especially in unique formats, such as pop-up books and books with movable parts. On display are works by eminent practitioners of this unusual art, including Robert Sabuda and Thacher Hurd.
The Mathes Reading Figurines Collection contains over 200 figurines, small sculptures, carvings, and figure groups depicting reading or the use of books. The collection is the gift of Miriam B. Snow Mathes (1896-2003), a member of the University faculty from 1934 until 1971, who began collecting in 1939 and continued acquiring new additions throughout her life. The highlights of the selection on display are the large figures of "Black Peter" and "St. Nick," created by the renowned ceramics maker Duncan Royale.
The exhibit is located at the north end of the Skybridge. It was prepared by Tamara Belts, Western Libraries Special Collections.
