Statement About Potentially Harmful Language and Content

Western Libraries Archives & Special Collections acknowledges that problematic content exists in our collections, collection description, and teaching tools. This may include culturally sensitive, offensive or triggering material, such as explicitly racist, misogynist, ableist, and homophobic; as well as Eurocentric materials that contribute to a white supremacist system. We recognize the harm that comes from engaging with these materials, and we aim to collect and describe archival and special collections in a manner that is respectful to the individuals and communities who create, use, and are represented in the resources we manage.

Archives & Special Collections staff are engaged in a process to review and address offensive or harmful content as part of ongoing collections management work. When we discover problematic language in our collection description, we review it for possible revision. In some instances, information derived from the original historical material may be retained if it provides additional context about the people who created it. We recognize that terminology evolves over time and that efforts to create respectful and inclusive practices must be ongoing.

We welcome user input to help us address these issues. To provide feedback or request dialogue about the content of our collections, or the description of those collections in finding aids, catalog records, and teaching tools and resources, please contact us.
