Job Title: T-1 New Peer Tutor | Reports to: Assistant Head of the Tutoring Center, Anika Watson | Hiring Unit: Tutoring Center

Wages: $19.00 per hour.  | Expected Hours: 3-6 per week | Start & End Date: 09/22/2025 - 06/12/2026

Work Study and Non-Work Study positions available. 

These positions are represented by the Western Academic Workers United (WAWU) Union, a subsidiary of the United Automotive Workers Union, and covered by a collective bargaining agreement

Summary of Required Duties:

T1 New Peer Tutors provide student-centered, inquiry-driven tutoring support both in-person and virtually. New Peer Tutors work with individuals and small groups to facilitate subject-specific learning while integrating study skills support. New Peer Tutors support Tutoring Center operations by performing a variety of welcoming and front desk duties. 

Minimum and preferred qualifications

Required

All applicants must have:

  • Expertise in at least one Tutoring Center supported subject area
  • At least one academic year remaining at WWU
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • The ability to work independently and as a part of a team
  • Dedication to the Teaching and Learning Division/Tutoring Center mission and values
  • Ability to tutor math through PreCalculus (Math 118) 

Preferred

Preferred candidates will have:

  • Two years before graduation from WWU
  • Fluency in a language other than English
  • Previous tutoring or related experience 

Expectations/Required Duties

Approach and Professional Practice Responsibilities

Peer Tutors provide peer to peer support in-person and online using a coaching model with empathy, inclusiveness, and integrity to Western students using the Tutoring Center by facilitating student learning and connecting students with resources.

  • Facilitate student learning and connecting students with resources.
  • Evaluate and challenge traditional and oppressive norms and practices through the engagement of academic literacies; more specifically problem solving and quantitative reasoning.
  • Promote inquiry for gaining and sharing knowledge.
  • Collaborate as respectful, productive, and ethical members of a diverse and inclusive intellectual community.
  • Demonstrate a sense of agency for managing their own learning and support agency in the learning of others. 

TC (Tutoring Center) Operations and Service Responsibilities

Peer Tutors provide student-centered, inquiry-driven, tutoring with integrated study skills support in the Tutoring Center. Tutoring services include:

  • both in-person and virtual tutoring.
  • subject specific drop-In for individuals.
  • subject specific study tables for small groups.

In addition to their tutoring responsibilities, Peer Tutors support the operation of the Tutoring Center’s services by:

  • actively creating a welcoming and inclusive environment.
  • monitoring and responding to LibChat support requests.
  • managing the tutoring waitlist.
  • performing front desk tasks including check-ins/outs, responding to inquiries, providing technical assistance, and managing resources.

Professional Development Responsibilities

  • Attend all required meetings:
    • Fall: September 22-23, 2025
    • Winter: January 5, 2026
    • Spring: May 30, 2026
  • Participate in weekly T-1 cohort training (Fall quarter)
  • Complete study skills coaching training (Winter quarter)
  • Attend weekly subject-specific review sessions
  • Complete service-specific training as needed

Work Locations and Reporting 

  • Locations: Wilson Library and Haggard Hall buildings
  • Staff are typically scheduled 3-10 hrs./week depending on staff availability and operational need.
  • The Tutoring Center is closed during intersessions. There are no scheduled hours other than staff meetings.
  • Week 1 schedule is on a sign-up basis only. Staff will receive the week 1 sign-up and the draft quarterly schedule no later than one week before the quarter's start.
  • Finals week schedule is on a sign-up basis only. The Tutoring Center is closed Thursday and Friday of finals week with no staff scheduled those days

This position has the possibility for an extension on this 9/21/2026. Where appointments have the possibility of extension or re-hire, you will be informed at the earliest feasible date of the timeline for re-hire or reappointment decisions and any required process steps. For positions that have continuous or ongoing recruitments, you will be informed of your status (e.g., reappointment, non-reappointment, in consideration if there are additional openings) at the same time as reappointment decisions.
